Full Description
Castle of Fiddes is a 16th century castle built on an L-plan with modifications. The main block lies north and south with a wing extending to the east. A large circular stair-tower rises in the re-entrant and projects round beyond the gable of the main block. This tower has an open platform roof, formerly roofed, with its parapet carried on individual corbelling with a machicolated projection to defend the doorway below. Another circular tower also rises at the southwest angle of the main block, which is corbelled out to square at top to form a small watch-chamber. A stair-turret projects half-way along the north front, above first floor level, which also squares out. Angle turrets crown the wing gable and the northwest corner of the main block. There are shot-holes in the corbelling of the angle turrets for downward shooting. The basement is vaulted, with a kitchen to the east containing a large fireplace arch. Now a farmhouse.
