Full Description

Remains of a mound, thought to have been a large cairn, but which excavation revealed to be the remains of a kiln. The excavation, in 1860, found an 'ancient' kiln circa 2,6m in diameter at the top, circa 1.37m in diameter at the bottom, and about 2.13m deep. The inside was lined with stones and small boulders bearing the marks of fire, the bottom covered with rudely-shaped bricks in a decomposed state and under the bricks was a layer of smooth clay about 10cm thick. The entrance to the kiln was by rude steps on the west side. At the base of the kiln was found 'a large quantity of black, unctuous earth, vegetable charcoal and a small quantity of burnt oats and barley'. No mention of it in any records was found. OS (1969) noted that it then presented the appearance of a denuded cairn measuring circa 9m in diameter and 0.3 high, with an excavated hollow on its southwest side. At that time there was no trace of the kiln or other structure within it. RCAHMS site visit in 1982 recorded that the site of the mound is occupied by a water tank.
