Full Description

Railway bridge, still in use, depicted on the OS 1st and 2nd edition maps. Topographic and photographic recording was carried out in May 2015 as part of the programme of archaeological works for the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route. It was constructed by the Aberdeen Railway, later the Scottish North Eastern Railway, passenger services along the line commencing in February 1850. The embankment is likely to date from that period but the date of the bridge is unknown. The bridge spans the B979, the main span on three loadbearing 'I' beams. The flanking abutments are built of coursed and dressed sandstone, with upper parapet walls of brick. On both the east and west the embankment has been strengthened by a stone retaining wall.
