Full Description
Town hall, still in use, built by Matthews and Lawrie (Inverness) in 1879, with additions by D and J. R. McMillan in 1903. It is a two-storey and attic, six-bay, Renaissance-style Town Hall with a five-bay, piend-roofed hall to the rear. It is constructed from stugged squared rubble with contrasting polished and raised red sandstone ashlar quoins and dressings. The rear hall is of snecked rubble with stugged ashlar dressings. The grey slate roof has shouldered and coped ashlar stacks with a full-complement of cans and ashlar-coped skews. The principal (west) elevation has five symmetrical bays to the south with a corniced, pilastered doorpiece under a plain frieze with a two-leaf panelled timber door at the centre, and segmental-arched, keystoned windows in the flanking bays. The first floor has regular fenestration linked by a band course at the springing of arches with roundheaded, keystoned windows. A single, slightly set-back, bay to the north has a cart-arch pend at the ground and a single window above. There are five pedimented dormer windows set back behind a parapet, with squat urns and centre panel with an eroded date. The north (hall) elevation has four round-arched windows, partially obscured by a later lean-to range, and a further two-storey crowstepped wing to the outer east. Some interior detail is retained, including moulded plasterwork cornices, a timber fire surround, vertically-boarded timber dadoes, architraved and panelled doors and a broad, top-lit, dog-leg staircase with an enclosed balustrade. The public hall has a decorative, compartmented, vaulted ceiling and horseshoe gallery with decorative cast-iron parapet and stage to the east and a bronze and marble mural monument 'In Memory of J. W. Crombie MP for Kincardineshire 1892-1908. Erected by His Constituents'.
