Full Description

Restaurant, still in use as such, built by Colonel Tawse and Messrs Hall in 1936 for the Northern Co-Operative Society. The Caroon Tea Rooms closed in 1963 and was used as stores, before being restored and renovated in 1999-2000 by Hall and Tawse. It is a tall single-storey and basement, three-bay, piend-roofed, Art Deco restaurant building constructed from banded brick and reinforced concrete with a slate roof, and set on a terrace above a period garden. The principal south elevation is symmetrical with a double stair leading to the loggia with an Art Deco metalwork balustrade railing. The centre bay of the set-back face has a large bow, comprising a narrow-centre, five-part full-height window with decoratively-astragalled top-lights and similarly-detailed four-part windows to the outer bays with outer lights as doors. The metal-framed windows have decoratively-astragalled glazing patterns combining vertical and horizontal patterning with Art Deco symbols The west elevation has a tall piended bay at the centre with a tall, raised-centre five-light window, a flat-roofed loggia to the south with later infill glazing and a lower piended bay to the north with symmetrical glazing. The north elevation is recorded as part of 26-32 Evan Street (NO88NE0222). The Art Deco interior comprises a main apartment with vaulted ceiling, horizontal panelled walls incorporating some decorative metalwork panels and a counter with a clock incorporated behind. The east end wall has a Art Deco engraved 'Picasso glass' mirror and tall curved mirrored supports. Original light fittings are retained and the toilets have an original decorative floor and wall tiles and fittings. The wood floors were reclaimed from the Aberdeen College of Commerce. A top-lit link corridor leads to the north entrance (Evan Street). There is rubble and brick terracing to the ornamental garden, with garden walls to the street with period gate- and end-piers, ironwork archway incorporating the name 'CARRON RESTAURANT' and boldly detailed wrought-iron gates. During World War II it was used as the NAAFI canteen.
