Full Description

Well, now a fountain, dated 1860 and restored in 1982. It is a rectangular-plan, pedimented structure enclosing a mineral well sited beneath the Glenury Railway Viaduct and erected on the site of the hole well of St Kieran (or St Caron), the patron saint of Fetteresso Parish. The structure is of pink and grey Peterhead granite and has a base course, flat cope, triangular pediment and flanking fielded piers. The east face has a small circular basin below a round-arched niche incorporating a scallop shell. An incised tablet in the tympanum is worded 'ST KIERAN'S WELL ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION AD 1860'. A small bronze plaque has been applied at the right, worded 'RESTORED BY STONEHAVEN AND DISTRICT COMMUNITY COUNCIL MARCH 1982'. The water supply was restored in 1982, but has subsequently been severed.
