Full Description

Remains of a field system. What may be traces of a prehistoric field system are visible on rough ground on the northwest flank of the hill. Most of the area is obscured by dense gorse but at least two low banks and a small cairn can be identified. The field system is traversed from northwest to southeast by a later earthwork comprising double ditches with a medial bank 3m thick and 0.6m high. The earthwork continued round towards the southwest, but this section has been levelled by ploughing. Excavation was carried out in June 2015 as part of the programme of archaeological works ahead of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route. A total of 25 trenches were excavated, and features recorded in twelve of these. Further investigation was carried out following topsoil stripping. The work recorded two field boundaries, evidence of at least two field systems, a hearth and a pit. No dating evidence for the field systems was recovered, although that with plough furrows running east-west was the earlier, and is possibly prehistoric in date. The pit yielded a small assemblage of undiagnostic prehistoric pottery and charcoal lumps. To the south end of the excavation area was a substantial linear dyke and double-ditch feature which potentially could be associated with medieval activity in the area, although no features could be clearly attributed to this period.
