Full Description
Cairnfield. A group of at least 65 small cairns extend over an area of circa 4 ha, the cairns measuring up to 6 m in diameter and 0.5 m in height. As part of the archaeological evaluation works (NO88NE0186) carried out in 2021 by Guard Archaeology at Ury House Estate (NO88NE0104) prior to proposed development, a walkover survey was carried out in the northeastern extent of the development area in Slicewells Wood, covering the cairnfield site. Five small possible clearance cairns were identified (CA005, CA006, CA007, CA008 and CA009) to the west of the road B979. Cairn (CA005) measured approximately 8 m in length by 4 m in width with a height of 1 m. A smaller cairn (CA006) measured approximately 4 m in length by 2 m in width with a height of between 0.5 m and 0.6 m, while cairn (CA007) measured approximately 3 m in length by 2.5 m in width with a height of 0.5 m. Cairns (CA008) and (CA009) both measured approximately 4 m in length and 3 m in width with a height of 0.4 m. All consisted of a loose and unbonded irregularly shaped stones beneath variable degrees of vegetation. A further three small possible clearance cairns (CA010, CA011 and CA012) were also identified in the northeastern area. Cairn (CA010) measured approximately 4 m in length by 3.5 m in width with a height of 0.4 m, while cairn (CA011) measured circa 3 m in diameter with a height of 0.4 m. Cairn (CA012) measured approximately 4 m in length and 3 m in width with a height of 0.75 m. All consisted of a loose and unbonded aggregation of irregularly shaped stones beneath variable degrees of vegetation. The walkover survey in this area also revealed a number of other small, loose and unbonded concentrations of irregularly shaped stones, immediately adjacent to drainage ditches that extended through the woodland in the northeastern extent of the development area, which were interpreted as being the result of the construction of mid-twentieth century drainage ditches.
