Full Description
The remains of a large cairn are situated amongst dense gorse thickets on the south flank of Kempstone Hill. A late 18th-century sketch map around the hill depicts three large cairns besides the two standing stones. One is probably this cairn and another may have been situated near Blackhills (NO 894 901), but the position of the known cairn and the standing stones cannot be reconciled with the sketch map. In each of the large cairns, however, there were 'several stone coffins about 4ft long, and in the inside small urns, containing a little earth' (Barclay 1792, 566).
