Full Description

Short cist and site of cairn. The cairn was removed about 1795 when some 'sepulchral urns' were found in it. The cist was found by workmen in 1822 while digging for road metal into a knoll. The cist contained the crouched skeleton of a man, apparently headless, and said to have been wrapped in vegetable fibres similar to netting, and a considerable quantity of human hair. Over the breast were the remains of a small oval box, about 5 inches long, apparently of elegantly carved wood. Prof. Stuart (1846) was sure that it was the burial-place of Malcolm I. The cist was carefully covered and trees planted over it. The few relics were preserved at Fetteresso Castle, but now lost. The name Malcolm's Mount appears to have been applied to the knoll after the cist was found. A watching brief carried out in 1998 on groundworks for new houses adjacent to the mound recorded no archaeological features. Work was also undertaken at this time to restructure the cist surround.
