Full Description
Remains of a section of the Bervie Branch of the Montrose to Inverbervie railway line as depicted on the OS 2nd edition map, with a number of signal posts The branch was opened in 1865, taken over by the North British Railway in 1881, and closed in 1951. The section at Horse Crook Bay was recorded during site visit in 2023 as part of the SCAPE Coastal Zone Assessment Survey. The raised earthwork railway embankment, boundary walling, building footings, crossings, parallel track and fences survive in sections all along the coast between Johnshaven and Inverbervie. The track is carried over the edge of Horse Crook Bay on a stone revetted section. The disused line now forms the coastal path between Gourdon and Inverbervie. A number of interesting 19th century fence strainer posts survive along the route of the railway. SCAPE also recorded remains of estate walling which is delimiting the Montrose-Bervie railway line, the walls of similar style to walling elsewhere in the estate. The remains of a pedestrian footbridge which ran beside the railway line is also recorded.
