Full Description
Town, created a Royal Burgh in 1342 (the only Royal foundation in Kinkardineshire) by David II in thanksgiving for his delivery from storms and pursuit in 1341.The ancient burgh is strung along a low ridge, the High Street running down from the small Market Square. A small harbour at the mouth of the Bervie Water was in use until the mid 19th century. Manufacture of sail-cloth started in 1750, followed by coloured thread production in 1778.
