Full Description
Hallgreen Castle. The castle is an L-plan building of the late 16th Century, but which probably has a much earlier nucleus, and is much altered with 19th century additions. The south and east fronts are old work, with wide splayed gun-loops, possibly from earlier castle. The east is partially re-built but corner turrets at angles have been left unaltered by later additions. A modern mansion has been attached at the north and west. Hallgreen Castle is said to have been founded by the Dunnet family in the 14th Century, but passed to the Raits in the 15th Century. The carriage stables for the castle are to the south (NO87SW0120).
Period Notes
Built 16th C but said to be founded 1376. Marriage lintel dated 1687. Derelict in the 1970s, restoration works in the 1980s. Plaster ceiling with coat of arms dated 1683.
