Full Description
A gun battery and magazine are depicted at this location on the OS 1st edition map. They are not depicted on the later 2nd edition. A watching brief in was carried out in 2006 on works to upgrade water treatment works. No evidence for survival of the battery was found in the pipe trench excavated, but close examination of the wall bounding Wairds Park revealed what might be surviving traces of the south wall of the magazine. It includes a blocked entrance. Site visit in 2023 as part of the SCAPE Coastal Zone Assessment Survey recorded that the wall bounding the caravan site at Wairds Park contains a section of different stonework which may be the surviving traces of the magazine, and includes a blocked up opening. Slight remnants off stone walls were also recorded in the long grass at the coast edge (NO8015267220).
