Full Description

Farmstead, still in use, and depopulated settlement consisting of a terraced field, field plots, rectangular house foundations, a possible kiln, a circular feature built up on stones, and a whin mill comprising a central stone with an upright iron pin and a circular trough. The OS 1st edition map shows the farmstead comprising a U-plan steading with attached horsemill on the north side, and a house and garden to the southeast. North of the steading is a rectangular pond and sluice. To the southwest of the farmstead on the other side of the track is a roofless rectangular building, two enclosures, one limekiln (to the north) which appears to be still in use and two disused limekilns annotated 'Old Limekiln. Neither of these are shown on the 2nd edition map, and the northernmost kiln is annotated as 'old limekiln'. The farmstead is essentially unchanged although a small building has been added to the east of the steading and the pond/sluice are no longer shown. Current OS maps indicate that this small building and the horse mill have since been removed and part of the steading appears to be disused. West of the road the building and limekilns are not shown, although the enclosure walls remain. Recent aerial photographs also show footings of the building shown on the 1st edition, a second possible building and what may be the remains of the north lime kiln. A level 1 standing building survey was carried out in 2013 prior to proposed conversion of the steading. The farmstead is believed to have been constructed in the 19th century although the exact date has not been ascertained.
