Full Description
Farmstead, still in use, shown on the OS historic maps. The 1st edition map shows a rectangular farmhouse orientated southwest-northeast with a small projection from the northwest elevation and a garden enclosure to the southeast. A long L-plan steading north of the house is orientated northwest-southeast, with a circular horse-mill on the southern end of the northeast elevation, a rectangular protrusion from the northwest elevation and a small rectangular building in the farm courtyard. A long rectangular range is shown opposite, with a smaller rectangular outbuilding to the northwest with an adjacent pump . A mill pond is shown further to the northwest, with a lade running to the rear of the steading near to the horse-mill. On the 2nd edition map, a dam and sluice are shown at the mill pond. Another small rectangular building has been added in the farm courtyard, along with a rectangular enclosure and further small projections added to the steading on the northeast and southeast elevations. The horse-mill is still shown. The projection to the farmhouse has been enlarged forming a L-plan house. On the current OS edition map, the former small projections to the northeast and southeast elevations of the steading, the southern small building in the farm courtyard and the horse-mill are all no longer shown, with only remains of the former courtyard enclosure shown. The former outbuilding to the northwest of the west range is shown as a ruin, but the pump is still shown. The wall lines of the former mill pond are still shown, but the area has been drained and vegetated over, with the former lade now shown as a drain. The farmstead is located in the area where a desk-based assessment and walkover survey were carried by AOC in 1998, in advance of a new sand and gravel quarry (NO79NE0097).
