Full Description
Remains of an old road, possibly Medieval, which extends from just West of Glenbervie towards the northwest. It was used as an old drove road. It is depicted on Garden's map of 1776 where it is marked as 'Builg Road, a Foot Path'm and also on James Robertson's 1822 , map at which time it appears to be in use as a vehicular track. Field survey carried out in 2005 in connection with a proposed wind farm recorded that the original drove road appears to have survived only to the north of NO6950485911. This section consisted of a partially overgrown hollow-way, which was circa 2.2 m wide. The surface consists of overgrown areas of off-white gravel (probably in situ subsoil) interspersed with larger stones. To the south, the drove road has been upgraded for vehicular use and has been widen to circa 3.1 m. The larger stones seen in the northern part of the road are not present and within the wheel tracks, the road has been eroded to the level of the subsoil. Where the road enters the forestry plantation at NO6968385647, it is very overgrown with a high grass centre and mud filled wheel tracks. At NO7000685074, the line of the drove road separates from the line of the vehicular track and enters an area of felled woodland. This area has been mounded and re-planted. The drove road shows up as a slight hollow-way in this area. An archaeological watching brief was carried out in 2014 during ground breaking works between NO6993085090 and NO69508591. It found that the drove road has been destroyed within the existing forested area.
