Full Description
Remains of church, dedicated to St Michael, which stood in the present graveyard
opposite Glenbervie House. Only a fragment of a tower or pillar remains, next to the Douglas Aisle, a burial aisle with a vault beneath which contains a carved tomb chest and mural monument superscribed 1680. It was first mentioned in a grant to Brechin Cathedral in circa 1222, and it was erected a prebend in the early 15th Century. It became Episcopalian, but was converted into the parish established church in the 18th Century and remained that until the new church (NO 7663 8073) was built in 1826. Toothing at the west end of the north wall confirms that the aisle is part of an earlier structure, almost certainly the church, but renovations and a growth of ivy have obscured any original details.
Period Notes
First mentioned 1222; erected a prebend in 1422; converted to Douglas Burial Aisle 1771; converted to parish church 1746; out of use 1826. Altar tomb from 1591 topped by mural monument 1680.
