Full Description

The remains of a small settlement with houses and a number of attached enclosures lie between Hole Burn and Burn of Anaquhat above the Cowie Water. It is depicted as ruined on the 1st edition OS map of 1867. This series of irregular-shaped enclosures may date from the 17th or 18th century at least. The area is now heavily wooded. Forestry Commission have recorded the remains of two small buildings at NO 7464 8781 which sit at either end of a rectilinear enclosure which might represent sheepcotes with a fold in the centre. They are depicted on the 1st edition OS map. There is the possibility of a subsequent structure lying down the slope, but this has been badly damaged. Forestry Commission have also recorded remains of a stone built farmstead with byre and enclosure at NO74348760;two small structures at NO74678772 and NO74688770; a possible building platform on a raised area at NO74728783. At NO74628805, on the east side of Burn of Anaquhat, is a rickle of stones which appears to be the remains of a platform or revetment of stones, possibly some form of dam. Remains of a probable dam on a secondary course of the burn was recorded at NO74738772. See also NO78NW0021. Field visit in 2003 recorded that the existing forestry access track has been cut through an area of small enclosed fields depicted on the 1st edition map. In total, 12 dykes were identified of which remains survive in the vicinity of the existing access track.
