Full Description
Remains of a building, shown as a ruin on the first edition OS map. Constructed of dressed stone. Possibly a former mill building. May date to the 17th or 18th Century (the nearby Mergie House has its origins in the 17th Century NO78NE0001). Building recording and monitoring of the topsoil stripping was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in August-September 2021 ahead of proposed demolition. Originally a mill, it is constructed of dressed quarried granite, and measures 5.2 m by 9.15 m, with walls 0.65-0.7 m wide, standing to a maximum height of 3.35 m at the south end. The mill had a lade which took water from the Cowie Water to power a wheel at the south end of the building. The wheel pit had a stone base, the interior of the building floored with slate. Original apertures pertaining to the mill included one for the wheel drive shaft. During the Second World War the interior of the building was infilled with sand and stone, the walls thickened and gun slits added to the upper walls to provide a defensive position overlooking the Cowie Water.
