Full Description

The remains of a small settlement or farmstead with attached enclosure to the west, and a series of irregular-shaped enclosures to the east, are depicted on the 1st edition OS map as ruined. These may of 17th or 18th century date. There may be other related features in the area. Forestry Commission have recorded various boulder dykes and clearance remains survive which appear to the farmstead of Brucklaw or the longhouse to the west (NO78NW0014). There is a possible building platform at NO 7497 8757 which sits against one of the dykes and positioned on an outcrop. Many, though not all, of the enclosure boundaries are shown on the 1st edition OS map. At NO 7527 8757 is an enclosure adjoining a stone dyke which might be a fold, although there is a slight possibility that it is the remains of a building. At NO74928770 is a platform of laid stones which may have been the course of an earlier track or an area of hardstanding. A small area of rubble circa 20 m north of the track noted in 2003 field visit may be the remains of the northernmost building shown on the OS 1sr edition map although this was not certain.
