Full Description

Two storey former dower house (also known as Johnston Lodge and Mains of Johnston), which probably dates originally to the 17th Century. A stone inset at the rear is dated 1679, and a door lintel is dated 1769. The building was extended in the late 18th Century, and remodelled in the 19th Century, but a large part of the original house has now been demolished. The interior has been modernised, the exterior plastered concealing any of the original structural details. the OS 1st and 2nd edition maps show a range of outbuildings on the north side of the house, which have since been removed. A watching brief was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in March 2014 during digging of foundation trenches for a new dwelling to the west of the existing house. No archaeological features were revealed. Two possible foundations, one of stone cobbles the other brick, recorded in a cable trench may be associated with former garden features.
