Full Description
Former corn mill, now in agricultural use, depicted on historic OS maps and with a C-listed 18th century mill building with later alterations. It is shown on the 1st edition OS map as a group of seven buildings and a C-plan steading. A mill lade leads through the mill from the north, re-joining Bervie Water to the south. On the 2nd edition OS map two of the buildings have been removed, and another two added. There are alterations to most of the remaining buildings, including the court of the steading being filled. The building to the south is now depicted as a saw mill. Current OS maps show three buildings have been removed, including the saw mill building to the south. There are further alterations to the remaining buildings and much of the steading has been removed, leaving an L-plan range. Some sections of the mill lade remain. The C-listed mill building is an L-plan rubble-built building with a slated roof that is piended at the kiln end and straight skewed at the other. Only the axle survives of the wheel and 2 pairs of stones. The pyramidal roof of kiln was rebuilt in 1912. A watching brief carried out along the route of the mill lade in 2013 by CFA to the north of the mill (from circa NO 7807 7973 to NO 7801 7928) during groundworks related to laying cables. A diverted stream that was created when the nearby A90 was built intersects the route of the mill lade. No stonework, ditches or other features related of the mill lade were identified in that section during the watching brief.
