Full Description

House and possible site of motte/castle/house. The castle and house are thought to have been built on the site of a possible motte. The earliest date of building appears to be possibly 14th century, parts of which still survive incorporated into the later work. An account written about 1567 includes the story of the building of the first castle in 1420 but makes it clear that there was already a house of importance on the site by then. The present house, an 18th century enlargement of a 17th century house presents no external appearance of antiquity however beneath the tower-house and outbuildings to the northeast are barrel-vaulted chambers considered to be of the 14th century. The gabled wings contain 17th century plaster ceilings. The lands have been in the possession of the family of Arbuthnott since the late 12th century. To the west of the current house is a B-listed sundial (NO77NE0069) and garden house (NO77NE0067), to the east is a B-listed ice-house (NO77NE0072) and to the north is an A-listed bridge (NO77NE0071). See NO77NE0091 for Gardener's Cottage.
