Full Description

Remains of a former weaving factory, depicted on both the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps as a complex of two, parallel, long rectangular buildings with a square building at the W end. On the 1st edition map, it is named as 'Handloom Weaving Factory (Cotton and Woollens)' but by the 2nd edition map it has been renamed 'West Factory (flax spinning and weaving)'. Another long building had been added on the north side of the road although not clear if this was as part of the factory. The two long buildings on the south side of the road have since been demolished, but the square building survive, and was in use for some years as a local authority depot. The building north of the road also remains. Site visit in 2022 as part of the SCAPE Coastal Zone Assessment Survey noted that the smaller remaining building has cherry cocking masonry and a single moulded stone gate post on the roadside corner of the west gable. In 1866 the factory was recorded as being a 2-storey hemp store and starching loft alongside a 3-storey hand loom manufactory.
