Full Description

Remains of church, built on site of earlier church, later reused as a burial aisle. The present remains are 17th Century in date, and have been converted into a burial enclosure to the Porteous family, which incorporates parts of the old church walls. The walls survive to roof height of the enclosure. An early church may have stood on or near this site in the 9th Century. St Cyricus was regarded as the patron saint of King Giric who may have founded a church at Ecclesgreig (now St Cyrus) in his reign. A church certainly existed here in the time of King William (1165-1214). A church was dedicated to St Cyricus here in the 13th Century. The Parish church was here until the 17th Century. The probable site of the earlier church is indicated by a platform of turf, well-covered by burial enclosures. For present Parish church and churchyard see NO76SW0024.

Period Notes
