Full Description
Remains of castle, allegedly erected in the 15th century for David Barclay. Ruined tower on promontory end and part of a crenellated battlement along the east side of an isthmus which was originally guarded by two rows of battlements. Jervise says the building was '30-40 feet square'. According to local legend the 15th century laird took literally an instruction from the King to 'go and make soup of the Sheriff'. All that remains is are the north and east walls of the ruined stone tower on the promontory, measuring 2.5 m square internally with walls 4.5 m high and 0.6 m thick with a relieving arch beneath. The remainder has been destroyed by erosion. In the 19th century it was recorded that the approach across the isthmus was protected by two rows of walling, although only one was well preserved at that time. It was also noted that there were traces of buildings around the greater part of the promontory. The remains of the castle were recorded during coastal zone assessment survey carried out by SCAPE between February and March 2009. Scheduled in 2014.
