Full Description

Later 19th century villa dated 1880. A substantial 2-storey, 3-bay, classically detailed Italianate building approximate L-shape in plan. The western (principal) elevation is grey sandstone ashlar with dressings and a cornice. It has a 3-step stone flight leading to a central ornate tripartite doorpiece, with a panelled and carved twin-leaf door within an arched entrance, supported by paired pilasters, a richly decorated keystone, spandrels, modillions, entablature and a balustraded parapet for the first floor window above. This window is segmental-arched with architraved margins, flanking pilasters and armorial crests. The pilasters rise through the cornice and parapet to a pedimented wallhead feature with an urn finial. The two bays that flank the entrance have canted bay windows at the ground floor, with pilastered mullions, architrave heads and a balustraded parapet balcony for the window bays above. These first floor windows are bipartite, with pilaster mullions, a Doric entablature and a parapet above with a round-arch panel, armorial crest and urn finial. To the sides and rear the masonry is squared snecked and stugged red sandstone. The windows are timber sash and case. On the east elevation the staircase window has multi-pane glazing with coloured outer light panes. The grey slate piended roof has wallhead chimney stacks which are grey ashlar and corniced to the north and south, with red sandstone and dressings to the east. On the south elevation there are cast-iron rainwater downpipes with headers dated '1880'. There is a low, coped stone boundary wall to the west and northwest, with capped square section gatepiers at the entrance way and corners. The north boundary wall becomes a rubble stone wall after the last gatepier. There are brick out-houses and later brick and harl, piended roof garage to the north east.
