Full Description

Later 19th century villa built circa 1860. A substantial 2-storey, 3-bay, classically detailed symmetrical Jacobean building, approximate L-shape in plan on a corner site. The western (principal) and northern elevations are sandstone ashlar, with rusticated quoins, whilst the rear to the east and south are squared, snecked and stugged masonry. The base course is roughly hewn, with a deep ashlar base course above. The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass glazing, symmetrical bay windows on the front, with corniced and panelled stone balustraded parapets, architraved margins and round headed arcading. The roofs are pitched grey slate with stone skews and skewputts. There are corniced ashlar chimney stacks on the gableheads, roof ridges and rising from the eaves to the east, with some square section cans surviving. There are coped rubble stone boundary walls to the south, east and north east, a coped dwarf boundary wall to the north and west and corniced gatepiers to the north east and west. Against the south elevation is a garden gateway of channelled pilasters framing a keystoned, architraved, round-arched opening with a cornice and blocking course and an ashlar wall with triglyph frieze and cornice extending to the south, with a brick wall within the garden to the east. Additions were made to the property in 1894 by John Sim of Montrose adding the 2-storey wing to the north east and the gable ended projection to the south.
