Full Description
Cruciform plan church on the corner of Panmure Street, Provost Scott Road and St. Peter's Road, set within a churchyard with stone boundary walls, on the site of an earlier church, St Peter's, built in 1724, which burned down in 1857. The church was built by John Henderson in 1858, with an extension by Alexander Ross added in 1878 and H D Tarbooth added the 20th century porch. The church has a tower and stone spire on the south side, with the porch added in 1937. It is built in a decorated style, with large pink sandstone ashlar, squared, coursed and stugged with a battered band course around the ground floor, chamfered margins, battered cills and simple ashlar surrounds and hoodmoulds. There are leaded lights and stained glass in the principal lancet windows. The slated roofs have stone skews, gablet skewputts and small stone cross finials on the north facing gable, with a large stone cross to the east. The church is within a square enclosure formed by rubble walls of the original chapel of 1722. Later ashlar banded gatepiers have ornate corniced, pyramidal caps and tall leafed finials, with a lantern overthrow supported on a scroll decorated wrought-iron arch and later steel gates. Many 19th century gravestones, with some 18th century gravestones being much eroded. There are enclosures on the east wall. The graveyard also contains the Commonwealth war grave of Private David Joseph Mitchell (Black Watch) who died in December 1918. St Peter's joined with St Mary's Church (NO75NW0543) in 1929 and remains in ecclesiastical use. Within the church are two wooden memorial tablets commemorating member of the congregation who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars.
