Full Description
Terraced pair of houses, built in the mid 19th century. Two-storey, attic and basement, 3-bay classical houses, sandstone ashlar to the front, squared rubble to the rear with render repairs and lined render to the side. There is a band course above the basement and ground floor, a first floor cill course, an eaves cornice, a blocking course, a tablet above the centre bays and raised margins. The properties are symmetrical with entrances to the centre, a 3-step stone flight oversailing the basement, leading to consoled, corniced and architraved doorpieces with a 2-pane rectangular fanlight and deep set doors. The doors are 2-leaf and 2-panel to the right (No. 55), and 4-panel to the left (No. 53). Windows are centred above at the first floor, with flanking 2-bays. The basement has two doors and one window to the left (No. 53), two windows and one door in to the right (No. 55), with a canted slate-hung dormer above to left and the right. Windows are timber sash and case, 12-pane to No. 55 and to the rear and plate glass to front of No. 53. The slated roof has stone skews, a brick gablehead stack to the west, two ashlar and brick stacks to the east, a broad brick gablehead stack to the north and polygonal cans.
A low coped ashlar boundary wall is to the front (south), with intact cast-iron railings, gates, balustrades and fleur-de-lys finials. A cast-iron lamp standard is at the foot of steps between the front entrances.
