Full Description
House built in 1762 by John Straton, upon the foundations and lower walls of an earlier house and later work. Two-storey with attic and 3-storey L-plan house with cellar, brick built with stone dressings, on the stone foundations of an older house. The rubble cellar of the original house survives with notable brick, lined wine bins. The building has a stone and rendered base course, raised stone quoins, long and short margins and relieving arches. The northwest entrance elevation has irregular fenestration, a Cavetto doorpiece to the left, with a curved canopy on wrought-iron brackets, a rectangular 3-pane fanlight and 2-leaf panelled doors. The windows are predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case. The slated roofs have decorative terracotta ridge tiles, coped skews and substantial brick gablehead stacks to the north, south and west. Brick and rubble boundary walls are to the rear on the east and south side.
The property is one of the most remarkable and notable of Montrose's town houses. A continuous line of owners from 1663 is recorded, but the age of the original stone building is uncertain. The grounds originally extended beyond the present Melville Hall (NO75NW0519) to the southeast and to Castle place to the northwest. The present entrance is through the pend at Nos. 9 - 11 Castle Place (NO75NW0477), this access being a condition of the sale of the land for the building of dwellings on Castle Place in the 18th Century.
Period Notes
