Full Description
Artillery emplacements and concrete tunnels of World War II date. Two large artillery emplacements were quarried out of the cliff by Polish engineers during 1941. They were likely to have held 75mm guns and were complex structures entered by a tunnel rom the road above. The tunnels were recorded during coastal zone assessment survey carried out by SCAPE between February and March 2009. Below the emplacement (NO7263156769) is an entrance to a concrete tunnel which appears to link to other tunnel entrances in the area. The entrance is circa 5m wide and 5m tall. Above it is a central plaque, partly in Polish part in English, the latter reading 'POLAND AND VICTORY, POLISH SAPPERS, 1941'. At NO7260956767 is another tunnel entrance. At NO7266456771 the survey recorded a partially collapsed rounded concrete structure surviving up to 1.5m in height and 1m in diameter no obscured by dense undergrowth.
