Full Description

Montrose war memorial, designed by H S Gamley and John Kinross, 1920, then H S Gamley and G W Browne, 1924, and unveiled on 1 June 1924. It was extended by William Lamb in 1947. There is a bronze, life-size, winged figure of Peace standing upon a globe and holding an olive branch in her right hand. She stands on a sphere, atop a large white granite square-section channelled pedestal, staged with a moulded base. There are bronze panels on each side, giving the roll of honour, and that on the south side bearing the inscription 'To the Glory of God and in sacred memory of those belonging to the Burgh of Montrose who gave their lives in a great cause 1914 - 1919'. The later 1947 addition is in the form of a pedestal on a podium of three steps, with wings to the east and west, each with two panels bearing a roll of honour for the 1939-45 war. A full transcription of the memorial is held in the AAS Digital Archive.
