Full Description

Farmstead and farmhouse, now in residential use, built in the 19th century or earlier. It is shown on the 1st edition OS map (1861) as a quadrangular steading, with an entrance to the West and an attached horsemill to the North. To the west of the steading is the farmhouse. There is a small rectangular building to the northwest West of the farmhouse and a garden to the east. On the 2nd edition OS map (1902), a rectangular building has been added to the east of the steading at the roadside. The small rectangular building to the northwest of the farmhouse has been extended, and another building with attached enclosure added to the northwest. Another building has been added at the Western extent of what was the garden, which has now been divided up with enclosures. Current maps show two modern cottages have been added to the west and one to the east of the earlier buildings. The horsemill and part of the north wing of the steading have been removed. The building to the west of the farmhouse has been removed. The south wing of the steading appears to have had the wallhead raised, and is constructed from rubble. The South elevation is split into three, separated by skews to the gabled slate roof. The Western section is left blank. The middle section has four bays, with three segmental round-arched key-stoned windows and a hood-moulded off-centre doorway. The eastern elevation is harled, with large modern windows filling almost the full elevation. The farmhouse is two-storeys and attic, with a piended slate roof and wallhead stacks. It is constructed from rubble, with ashlar margins and long and short quoins and an ashlar frontage to the west. The front West elevation has three bays, with round-arched recesses above the ground floor windows. There is a later flat-roofed entrance porch added to the central ground-floor bay, with the recess just visible above it. The first floor windows surmount a string-course. The rear east elevation, facing the steading, has a single-storey and attic lean-to addition. There is a large flat-roofed addition to the north elevation. A watching brief was carried out by SUAT in June 2002 on groundworks relating to conversion of the steading. It found the area had been disturbed and levelled up during the lifetime of the present buildings, but no earlier activity was found. An inspection of the buildings showed they have been modified, perhaps in the 19th century of earlier. There were some hand-made bricks and 19th century roof trusses noted.
