Full Description
Country house, still in residential use. It was built in 1813 on the site of an old manse and enlarged by Archibald Simpson in the first half of the 19th century. The 1st edition OS map shows an irregular shaped walled garden to the East of the house, divided into two by a tree-lined path. The 2nd edition OS map shows the garden as having been cleared of trees and paths, with small buildings added to the Southern corners. An L-plan building is shown to the North-East of the house, following the route of the North-East driveway, with a small road-side rectangular building to the East. The house, L-plan building and walled garden remain much the same as depicted on the 2nd edition OS map, although the road-side building has gone. The house is a two-storey Regency stucco villa, with slate piended roofs, a semi-circular wood-columned portico to the South-facing front elevation and an ornate cast-iron verandah to the rear North-facing elevation. There is a glazed extension to the East of the South gable. An inset lintel dated 1638 is presumably re-used.
Period Notes
Built in 1813 on site of an old manse, and enlarged later in the early-19th century. There is an inset lintel dated 1638, presumably reused. Listed on 11/06/1971.
