Full Description
A pair of harbour lights that mark the route into the River South Esk, still in use, built in 1818 by Robert Stevenson. They are depicted on the 1st edition OS map as 'lighthouses', and on the 2nd edition OS map as 'lighthouses (fixed red)'. Current maps now depict the eastern light as 'pilot beacon (fixed red)'. The inner light (NO 7186 5697) is a circular stone tower that is harled and painted, with windows on four levels facing seawards and a doorway on the north side. The tower tapes to a gallery on a cast-iron balustraded ring. The lantern is in octagonal housing, with an ogee roof and ball finial. The outer light (NO 7213 5696) that paired this is now reduced to four base courses, with a replacement built slightly to the north. It has been noted that this outer, lower, light was erected on a base of dressed stones taken from an 'old fortification' on the Sandness.
Period Notes
Built in 1818. One has subsequently been reduced to four base courses and replaced. The remaining light was listed on 30/03/1999.
