Full Description
Farmstead depicted on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps. On the 1st edition map, the site is named 'Rammahaggan'. It is depicted as an L-plan steading, open to the southwest, with cottage to the southwest, mill building with sluice and dam to the west, and a further linear steading to the north east with a limekiln to the north of this. By the 2nd edition OS map, the site has been renamed 'Dubstone'. The cottage to the southwest survives, with a pump now shown adjacent, and the sluice and mil dam survive. A new building has been built on the site of the L-plan steading (possibly a new farmhouse), the mill building to the west has been removed. a new U-plan steading open to the south has been added to the east of the site of the old L-plan steading. Only part of the linear steading to the northeast is shown at this time, and but the limekiln is not. Today, the site is named 'Dubston'. The west and east wings of the U-plans steading survive, as do the cottage and probable farmhouse to the west / southwest. The dam has been infilled. The steading to the northeast appears to survive also. The Aberdeenshire OS Name Books, 1865-1871, 'Aberdeenshire volume 09', describes Rammahaggan as 'A farm house occupied by James Grant, the property of Francis Farquharson Esq Finzean.' A standing building survey of the steading buildings was carried out by MAS in December 2020. The north range was probably a cattle byre, the east range was formerly a mill and barn, the west range a stables and the south range possibly a pigshed.
