Full Description

Rifle range depicted on the OS 1st and 2nd edition maps. The 1870 OS Name Book describes it as rifle range for the use of the Elginshire Volunteers, consisting of a raised footway from the road to the targets and butts with raised platforms at intervals of 50 and 100 yards to enable the target and butts to be approached at any stage of the tide. At that time it was the property of Colonel Grant Peterkin of Grange Hall. The range was in use during both the First and Second World Wars. The range is visible on recent aerial photographs. Recorded during site visit as part of Moray Community Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (CCZAS) in June 2022. the seaward structure is large earth mound on concrete foundation, to the south of which is a partially roofed concrete struucrre, built into the north side of an earth mounds. Remains of an earth bank stretch out southeastwards to the main road.
