Full Description
Farmstead, still in use, depicted on historic OS maps. The 1st edition shows a group of six buildings, the westernmost with an attached garden enclosure: the northernmost building appears to be roofless. A lade from a rectangular pond to the south leads to a mill wheel on the west side of the building in the middle of the group. By the time of the 2nd edition the easternmost building had been extended to form a U-plan, and the two buildings north of this had been removed. Smaller structures had been added north of the house. Current maps indicate that the west wing of the steading is no longer in use. The former millpond is now annotated as a cistern. A standing building survey of the then derelict steading buildings was carried out by Murray Archaeological Services in February 2021 ahead of proposed demolition. Constructed of rubble stone with red granite lintels and rybats at the openings, the roof of slate with ceramic ridge. Building 1, comprising most if the south range is the earliest, and the 1863 OS Name Book indicates that this was originally thatched. The east and west wings date from the later 19th century, the west range probably the earliest. Building 1 may also have been slated at this time. The west end of building 1 has been broken through for tractor access, but there has been otherwise little modification of the buildings. The steading provided a stable and two byres to accommodate up to circa 30 tied cattle. Survey also noted the extant mill building to the west of the steading: the hole for the mill wheel axis is visible on the west wall. A photographic survey was carried out in 2021 prior to proposed demolition and redevelopment.
