Full Description

Hotel, still in use, depicted on the OS 1st and 2nd edition maps. The 1st edition shows the Potarch Inn as an L-plan building standing on south side of the court of a U-plan steading. To the west is another long rectangular building, to the north a small structure and to the east a garden enclosure. By the time of the 2nd edition map (on which it is named Potarch Hotel) the buildings to west and north had been removed, a new small rectangular building added north of the steading, and a horsemill added to the north side of the steading. The hotel building had also been extended. The horsemill and building to the north have since been removed, the hotel further extended and altered. There has been a hostelry at Potarch since 1740, and it became a popular stopping place for visitors after construction of the Potarch Bridge (NO69NW0007) in 1812. Alterations and extension in 1897 were to the design of Walker and Duncan. A building survey was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in 2015 ahead of proposed development.
