Full Description

Remains of a cairn/cist. The OS Name Book describes a cist about 1.21m long and 0.61m broad, and then nearly filled up, although the date and circumstances of its finding were unknown. OS site visit 1972 found no trace of the cairn at the given location, NO 6355 9581, as indicated on the OS 1st edition map. Field visit in 2016 (Christie and Stenhouse) also found no trace of a cairn at this location but found what was believed to be the same cist at NO 63567 96031. This is a short rectangular cist, circa 1.17m by 0.53m and 0.6m deep, lined with upright stone slabs. Probable cap stones lie adjacent to the cist which appears to be at the centre of a round barrow circa 10m in diameter, and standing circa 1.5m above the surrounding landscape.
