Full Description

Cottages and site of a mills depicted on historic OS maps. The 1st edition shows a group of buildings annotated as corn mills, fed by a mill lade from the west. There had been some alterations and additions to the buildings by the time of the 2nd edition map one which they are annotated as saw mills. Current maps show that the mill buildings have been removed, but the cottages immediately to the west may remain as part of what is now Wood Cottage. Documentary research carried out by J Gilliatt records that the OS Name Book (1862-3) refers to both a corn mill and turning mill. In 1871 a bucket turner was listed as living at Invercanny in addition to three wood turners. Although there is no direct evidence for bobbin making here, it was likely the case. According to the evaluation rolls, between 1885 and 1925 the turning mill was run alongside a saw mill by Alexander Duncan who was a saw miller and wood merchant, and later by his wife. However, no wood turners are recorded as living at Invercanny after 1881, so it may not have operated as a turning mill after that date.
