Full Description
Mansion house, dating from 1817, now a hotel. It is a 2-storey and basement classical mansion house comprising an original 5-bay south facing cored with an advanced 2-bay bow to the left added in 1844 (John Smith), and later 19th century advanced 2-bay crowstepped gable to the right. Built of granite ashlar with coursed squared rubble basement to additions and west elevation, with string course between floors of the additions, and deep eaves course and blocking course above. The central, 1817, section has a hung-slate attic. Entrance door in south elevation reached by steps oversailing the basement. The west elevation has a 3-bay section to the right with a slightly advanced pedimented centre bay and pedimented entrance porch. An armorial panel dated 1817 and 1844 is set in the pediment. Internally the classical scheme is characterised by decorative plaster ceilings and well-detailed timber work. The house was considerably altered in the in early 20th century and is now a hotel. Immediately behind the house is the former Laird's house (NO69NE0016). To the northeast is the U-plan former stable block, converted to accommodation in 1986, comprising a 2-storey red granite range to the south and single storey grey granite ranges to the rear. Southwest of the house is a pair of granite pillars dating from circa 1840 with rusticated base and bands. The entranceway from the road to the south (NO6940099041) has square-plan gatepiers linked by coped quadrant walls with gatepiers to the centre with moulded pyramidal caps.
