Full Description
Church, site of church and graveyard. The medieval church dedicated to St Mark the Evangelist, stood to the south of the present church. The building was long and narrow with a presumably 17th century burial aisle, the Balbegno Aisle, on the north, access to which was gained by a covered opening outside the front wall of the present church until circa 1927, when the church was renovated and the access probably covered. The old church was finally demolished in 1803, with no trace left. The graveyard is still being used (oldest gravestone - 1615). The present church was built in 1804. The northwest transept aisle, slim tower and spire were added at the centre of southwest gable in 1838. Red rubble, white sandstone dressings, simple belfry lancets with gables over, plain octagonal spire. Recast in 1924 with broad sanctuary added to northeast gable, simple chamfered chancel arch and flanking side arches. Y-tracery, hammer-beam roof. The graveyard is approximately oval with good 17th and 18th century memorials.
