Full Description

Designed landscape of Fasque House (NO67NW0016), developed in the 18th and 19th centuries. The present mansion was built in the early 19th century, replacing an earlier house which lay to the west, its site later occupied by a garden and bowling green. The earlier house and gardens are shown on the Roy map of 1752 which shows the grounds as laid out about 1730 by Sir Alexander Ramsay. The enclosed parks north of the present house are the remains of his work, and there are also remains of his planting to the south, including probably part of the south and main drive. The Fasque estate was purchased from the Ramsays by the Liverpool merchant Mr John Gladstone (later Sir John Gladstone) in 1829. Features depicted on the OS 1st edition map include the formal garden and bowling green west of the later mansion, St Andrews Chapel (NO67NE0083) (built by Sir John in 1871) to the east of the house, walled garden (NO67NW0026) to the south, lake with a boathouse, lodges, The Octagon (folly NO67NW0032) and Home Farm (removed by the time of the 2nd edition map). A desk-based assessment of the estate, including a historic landscape assessment and standing buildings appraisal, was carried out by AOC in 2010, with subsequent standing building survey of a number of these buildings in 2016, see NO67NW0016, NO67NE0083, NO67NW0028, NO67NW0039, NO67NW0040, NO67NW0029, NO67NW0027, NO67NW0038, NO67NW0026, NO67NW0030, NO67NE0094, NO67NE0082, NO67NW0032, NO67SE0076. An trial trenching evaluation was carried out in 2016 by AOC prior to residential redevelopment within the Fasque House estate (NO67NE0093).
