Full Description

Mansion house and site of manor. The old manor house of Phesdo stood on rising ground adjoining the Auchencairnie lands. The present mansion house is a 19th century Neo-Greek U-plan main block on the south with northwest and northeast wings. The main house is 2-storey granite ashlar, 5-window front, centre bay advanced with single storey tetrastyle fluted Greek Doric portico, pilastered angles, consoled ground floor windows, architraved first floor windows. Tripartite entrance within portico, recessed consoled doorpiece, elaborate original 6-panelled lower panels oval, central panels with friezes of interlaced circles. The rear wings were internally altered and their north elevations remodelled in 1970. Interior has rectangular entrance hall with screen of Corinthian columns to square stair hall with single cantilevered flight. Elegant chimneypieces and consoled doorcases at principal rooms. The stables are plain classic buildings by John Smith, of low 2-storey rubble-built with margins. They have a symmetrical 5-bay west front, and taller advanced and pedimented centre bay with semi-elliptical coach-house arch.
