Full Description

Remains of farmstead. It comprises three main buildings of the period before the agricultural improvements. The first measures circa 26 m long by 3 m across and is subdivided into five chambers. There are the remains of a further structure attached to the southeast of the northwest wall. The second structure measures circa 33 m long, changing in alignment near the east end. The third is more substantial, being made of large shaped blocks, measuring 11 m by 5 m externally. To the east of the third structure are the substantial remains of a corn drying kiln. To the northwest of the first structure are the remains of two earlier buildings surviving as turf-covered footings. In the area around the farm steading are walls and enclosures broadly contemporary with it. The monument is of national importance as a farmstead of the pre-improvement period with good and well-developed field characteristics. It was recorded on estate maps from 1774 but was abandoned by 1864, although the farm was first recorded in 1632. It is depicted as ruinous on the OS 1st edition 1867 and 2nd edition 1888 maps, which show three unroofed buildings - one of two compartments - with an attached enclosure with a sheepfold on its northwest side. The physical remains date from more than one phase of development and the site has the potential to enhance considerably our understanding of pre-improvement settlement and agriculture, and particularly of the development of the design of farm steadings.
