Full Description

Farmstead, still in use, and mill, depicted on historic OS maps. The 1st edition shows a U-plan steading with buildings filling the court, and a rectangular building on the southeast end of the east wing. To the south-east is an L-plan building alongside a lade. To the north-west of the steading are two smaller conjoined rectangular buildings, and to the north a walled garden with house to the north-east. The layout is essentially unchanged on the 2nd edition. The farmhouse dates to the earlier 19th century and is of plain classic design, rubble built and two-storey. The three-window main block has a broad eave, slated and piended roof and end stacks. To the east and west are setback single storey one-window winds also with a piended slate roof. Windows have original 12-pane glazing. The mill is probably early 19th century. It has a single segmented arch, of rubble with dressed voussoirs. The buildings to the north-west of the steading are now Mill of Kincardine Cottages. A Level 1 Standing Building Survey was carried out in August 2017 by Rathmell Archaeology of the steading and mill prior to proposed conversion/demolition. It recorded that the site may have been in existence since the late 18th century, although the current buildings are 19th century. The steading buildings appears as one, however it is made up of various buildings strung together under a common roof. The mill lade was recorded in various locations, including an underground part that runs along the side of the south barn and an infilled section to the northeast of the north barn. At least three phases to the farmstead were identified, with the later structural alterations likely to be 20th century.
