Full Description

Statue of Robert Watson-Watt, the 'father of radar', erected in May 2014. Born in Brechin in 1892 (see NO56SE0273), Sir Robert Watson-Watt pioneered the radio and ranging technology (radar) that helped win the Battle of Britain. Watson-Watt became superintendent of the Bawdsey Research station in 1936, and he and his team went on to track aircraft at distances of up to 100 miles, developing the 'Chain Home' series of radar stations along the south coast of England, which proved crucial in warning of Luftwaffe attacks. The statue was unveiled on 3 September 2014 to mark the anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War.
